STATE OF EMERGENCY

Torrential Rains, Flooding, Power Outages in Parts of Quintana Roo

Flooding in TulumThe southern region of Mexico's popular Quintana Roo region is under a state of emergency after a severe storm lashed the region.

Torrential rain flooded streets and shopping malls in the area on 14JUN, and Riveria Maya News said parts of Tulum and Chetumal are still without power due to the heavy rains.

State Coordination of Civil Protection and municipal emergency workers were out overnight on 14JUN and early on 15JUN helping stranded pedestrians and motorists alike. Military personnel were sent into the streets in heavy-duty vehicles to rescue soaked pedestrians who were caught off-guard by the rain.

The Yucatan Times reported that images from the flooding showed that “streets disappeared in Chetumal (south of Tulum) and nearby municipalities,” and several vehicles were left underwater.

There was no immediate word on whether area hotels and resorts were affected.

Social media posts from the region showed people milling about towns in the region, with water above their knees. Other posts showed workers rescuing stranded dogs.

The Times said shelters have been provided for flood victims in Chetumal. It also said a bulletin was circulated after 14JUN to advise people in the area to observe caution and avoid main roads until the water level drops.

Relief may be on the way. The Weather Network forecast for Quintana Roo for 15JUN and 16JUN showed mostly sunny skies, albeit with daytime highs around a steamy 43C.
