​​Closure of Russian Airspace ‘Single Biggest Factor’ Stopping Foreign Airlines From Boosting Service to China

The head of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said closure of Russian airspace is the primary obstacle preventing foreign airlines from expanding service to China, reports South China Morning Post

Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General, said the closure, which is a result of the country’s invasion of Ukraine, will discourage U.S. and European carriers from ramping up service to China because of the extended distances they would have to fly. China and India have been granted access to Russian airspace.

While domestic air traffic in mainland China has recovered to pre-pandemic levels, international flights are still in the recovery phase.
