100 Days in, WestJet's New CEO Reveals Post-Pandemic Strategy: Focus on Western Canada

Alexis von Hoensbroech assumed his new post as CEO of WestJet on 15FEB, and in an interview with the Financial Post, shared his findings about the operator during his first '100 days,' as well as his strategy for recovery.

The biggest takeaway is that WestJet will move forward focused on its role as a Western Canada airline, with more routes and connections in the region. He admitted that will mean shrinking the airline's presence in Eastern Canada, particularly regional routes.

WestJet will focus on growing as a low-cost carrier, not exclusively within the Swoop brand, and, through its pending acquisition of Sunwing, expand its investment in sun and leisure markets.

The airline will "maintain its premium offerings, focusing on the premium leisure and corporate premium segment in the West," as well as base its transcontinental Dreamliners out of Western Canada, maintaining its current European routes.

In addition, von Hoensbroech said the company would increase its commitment to technology and guest experiences, as well as expanding its fleet of fuel-efficient 737's to help manage growing fuel costs.
