Air Canada, Canadian National (CN), Crown corporations and other organizations subject to Canada’s Official Languages Act, such as port and airport authorities, will not be required to speak and understand French, according to a new ruling, despite calls from the Quebec Government.
As reported by CTV News, Liberal and Conservative members on the Standing Committee on Official Languages rejected the Bloc Québécois' amendment to Bill C-13 on 14FEB. The NDP was the only other party that voted in favour. Air Canada CEO Michael Rousseau caused controversy after giving a speech in Montreal which was mostly in English. He subsequently apologized and promised to improve his French.
