Air Canada Pilots Seek Big Wage Gains in Contract Talks

Air Canada and the union representing its 4,500 pilots have begun contract talks. It’s no surprise to anyone watching recent news about air - and especially pilot - labour deals to learn that Air Canada’s pilots hope to secure significant wage gains to match those of WestJet Airlines and U.S. carriers, as the Globe and Mail reports.

Currently in the ninth year of a 10-year deal, Air Canada pilots had previously been receiving annual raises of around two per cent. Pilots voted to pull the plug on their deal a year early and  enter contract talks, with their union seeking higher pay that reflects a dire pilot shortage.

As Open Jaw reported, ALPA recently negotiated a deal for WestJet pilots that included a 24 per cent wage increase over four years. Pilots at U.S. carriers, including Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Spirit Airlines and JetBlue Airways have also secured substantial wage increases in recent negotiations.
