Air Canada’s Mark Galardo on Increased Domestic Competition

In a one-on-one with Mark Galardo, Air Canada's EVP of revenue and network planning, at IATA’s AGM in Istanbul, Aviation Week reports that despite the number of domestic carriers in Canada such as Swoop, Flair and Lynx reaching an all-time high, the airline remains confident that its hub connectivity will act as a strong defense against low-cost upstarts. 

Galardo believes AC’s international route network and the strength of its connecting hubs in Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver make the airline “less vulnerable.” That said, with Canada’s population reaching 40 million, Galardo doesn’t discount the emergence of a successful long-term competitor, mentioning Porter as a possible contender.
