Airlines Are Teaming Up to Address Effects of Contrails on Climate Change

A newly established task force aims to address the impact contrails — the long, white clouds emitted by airplanes at high altitudes — have on the environment, reports Yahoo.

Contrails result from moisture freezing as it exits an aircraft's engine, and a 2020 study from the European Federation for Transport and Environment revealed that they nearly double the aviation industry's contribution to climate change. The task force, which consists of five major airlines — Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic — as well as airplane manufacturers Airbus and Boeing, plans a two-fold approach.

First, it seeks to improve the understanding of which regions of airspace are more likely to create contrails. Then, it will help create flight plans that can adapt to avoid these areas.
