Americans flocked to Canada after the border reopened to fully-vaccinated U.S. tourists, but now as summer ends and strict requirements have piled up, the number of land crossings has dropped. As a result, Canadian border businesses have not been able to capitalize on the reopening as expected. The high point for summer American arrivals in 2021 reached within 15 per cent of arrival numbers from summer 2019. However, border cities say that, as summer drew to a close and Americans became more aware of crossing restrictions, arrival numbers began to drop. "In the past, you'd have people who just crossed the border for dinner and then drove back home," Ritu Khanna, executive director of the South Surrey & White Rock Chamber of Commerce in Canada's British Columbia province. "Now, the feeling is, people are coming cautiously, still, because there are so many requirements." Wall Street Journal reported that travellers typically pass border cities to land in Canada’s major destinations, which comes at a cost for border businesses that expected a surge of American travellers.
