‘An Eyesore’: Armada of Ghostly Cruise Ships Clogs Italian Riviera, and Locals are Fed Up

For the past year and a half, three Costa Cruise ships have been parked at the center of Liguria’s Gulf of Poets, considered to be one of the most beautiful destinations in Italy and located by the port city of La Spezia. The ships are still running with the lights on and a small crew aboard, and remain a reminder of the blow of COVID-19 on the cruise ship industry. However, locals are finding them to be “an eyesore.” “We have such a beautiful coastline marred by these massive ships. They’ve been part of our view now for a year and a half. According to Italian environmental lobby group Legambiente, around 100 large cruise ships are parked in or near Italian ports.
