Australia’s 'Education-first' Approach on Hull Biohazard Compliance

Following biofoul incidents involving cruise ships in late DEC 2022, Australian officials communicated with Seatrade Cruise News regarding that country’s new biofouling regulations which came into effect during the country’s cruise lockdown in JUN 2022.

Biofouling is a common accumulation of microorganisms, plants, algae or small animals on ships’ hulls, and a spokesperson from the Australian government said that the management of biofoul to protect its unique marine environment is in place for all arriving international vessels. From 15JUN 2022 to 15DEC 2023, Australia says it implemented an “education-first” approach on hull biohazards to assist in cruise operators’ compliance. It recommends operators implement a biofouling management plan or clean all biofouling within 30 days prior to arriving in Australian waters.
