Banff Confronts Its Overtourism Problem: Skift

Banff National Park in Alberta is cracking down on overtourism in its new 10 year plan, starting a ban of private vehicles in certain areas of the park, including the road which leads to the popular Lake Moraine.

As reported by Skift, a typical busy day in Banff sees around 9,500 unique inbound and outbound vehicles for an estimated 23,000 day visitors. According to Parks Canada, traffic workers were required “24 hours a day” in 2022 in response to demand for access to Moraine Lake, and the parking lot also remained full for “nearly 24 hours a day” at the peak of the area’s summer tourism season. In response, the town of Banff’s new “10 Year Plan for Tourism” hopes to address issues such as overtourism, carbon neutrality and reducing single-use plastics, among others.
