Bedbugs: What Travellers Need to Know This Summer

Bedbugs are a common concern for travellers, but there are a few things they can do to avoid encountering these pesky parasitic insects this summer, reports CNN.

While bedbug infestations can happen in all types of places, hotels and other lodging are often major spreaders, says the report. Record increases in travel and staff shortages in the hospitality industry may contribute to a rise in the pests - and risk to travellers.

To prevent infestation, travellers are advised to do a bed check even before they unpack. Even if bedbugs themselves can’t be found, there are telltale signs travellers can be aware of. It is also recommended that travellers keep their suitcases on an elevated surface instead of on the floor in a corner to avoid the possibility of bringing bedbugs home with them.

According to the U.S. Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, bedbug bites can be very uncomfortable but they don’t spread any diseases and can be treated easily.
