When Porter had to ground its flights for 18 months during the pandemic, two ultra-low-cost carriers, Flair Airlines and Lynx Air, began operations competing with the airline. But as air travel returns, Porter is set for significant growth in the near future and is knocking at the doors of national airlines, an analysis in Skies Mag explains.
The company placed an order for 30 Embraer jets in JUL 2021, and increased that order to 50 in JUL 2022. With the federal government ruling out extending YTZ runways to allow for jets, Porter instead began flying its new jets out of YYZ while maintaining service from YTZ with its smaller aircraft. In 2023, the carrier has been expanding its network with the new jets, flying to multiple Canadian cities and looking at expanding the U.S. and Caribbean in the near future.
According to the analysis, Porter’s main challenges remain competition, especially from Flair and Lynx, and its relatively low profile outside eastern Canada.
