Can It Be Too Hot For a Plane to Fly?

As extreme heat waves persist around the world, a Delta Air Lines flight was recently cancelled in Phoenix when the city saw temperatures soar to 111 degrees fahrenheit, reports USA Today. The plane's interior became intolerable from the heat, and paramedics treated at least three passengers for heat exhaustion.

High temperatures have a significant impact on aircraft performance, such as reducing the amount of weight the plane can safely carry. At times, it can be too hot for a plane to take off.

The decision to operate flights during extreme heat lies with airlines and flight crew, who consider factors such as aircraft type, weight, runway conditions and weather. Manufacturers, such as Boeing and Airbus, design jets to withstand high temperatures, but there is no specific threshold for where they can and cannot take off. As climate change continues to contribute to more extreme weather, the aviation industry may be further impacted by heat on its performance.
