Canada, U.S. Announce New Nexus Interview Option in Attempt to Clear Backlog

Canada and the U.S. are promising a new interview option for Nexus applicants, a new measure aimed to address a backlog of “thousands” of applications for the trusted-traveller program which was paused during the pandemic.

As reported by the CBC, a dispute over legal protections for U.S. border officers operating in Canada caused a delay in reopening Nexus offices on the north side of the border, which resulted in a backlog of “300,000 applications.”

The new process would allow air pax to complete an interview with a CBSA officer at offices near select Canadian airports. Applicants would then conduct a similar interview with a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer at U.S. Customs before boarding a flight to the U.S. Previously, interviews were able to be held at the same offices in Canada, reports the CBC.
