Canada's Bid to Support Caribbean: Strengthening Security, Tackling Climate and Boosting Finance

Last week, during an Ottawa summit attended by leaders from the 15 CARICOM nations, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau introduced the Canada-CARICOM Strategic Partnership (CCSP).

Set against the backdrop of a reported multifaceted crisis in the Caribbean, this initiative marks a potentially transformative period in Canada-Caribbean relations, reports the Globe and Mail.

The Caribbean region holds significant importance for Canada, with approximately 2 million Canadians travelling there annually. Yet, the Caribbean faces threats from climate change and fluctuating energy prices, endangering its crucial tourism sector.

Moreover, a spike in homicides, attributed to the rise in small arms and gang activity, poses further challenges.

For the CCSP to thrive, it is imperative to address regional security, climate-related issues, and financial constraints. A combined CAD $ 64.5 million was announced at the Canada-CARICOM Summit to address the region's climate and energy challenges. Canada's commitments are a step forward, but greater private-sector engagement and a revision of international financial norms are essential for the Caribbean's sustained stability.
