Environmental groups claim the new regulations announced by Transport Minister Omar Alghabra regarding cruise ship pollution fail to adequately address the ongoing contamination of Canada’s sensitive coastlines, reports the National Observer.
As Open Jaw reported, the rules target the discharge of greywater and sewage from cruise ships. As Open Jaw noted, the new regulations do not address the discharge of cruise ships' scrubber systems, which accounts for more than 90 per cent of cruise ships’ polluted discharge.
These systems flush pollutants into the water instead of the air. The ministry did not clarify when it plans to take action to ban or restrict scrubber wash water — something other jurisdictions have already done. Environmental groups are urging the government to take further action.
