Canadian airports and airlines saw a high number of flight delays again in MAR, causing new concern about summer travel, CTV News is reporting. Major airports and carriers had a weaker record than U.S. carriers and airports, and the Canadian’s industry’s own performance in 2019.
Around 61.2 per cent of flights left YYZ on time, compared to 73 per cent in 2019. YUL had an on-time rate of 68 per cent and YYC’s was 72 per cent, compared to 80 and 82 per cent in 2019.
Air Canada was on time 57.3 per cent of the time in MAR, compared to 69.6 per cent in MAR 2019. WestJet and Porter were on time 63 and 65 per cent respectively, compared to 80 and 82 per cent in MAR 2019.
Airline industry experts, including a former Air Canada executive, say airlines have been focussed on aggressive new schedules and growing their companies. Airlines and airports say delays are beyond their control and point to major government investments as the reason the U.S. industry is performing better than the Canadian one right now.
