CDC Reminds Cruise Lines of Its Authority as Industry Waits for Next Appeal of Legal Battle with Florida

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s conditional sailing order (CSO) may be non-binding in Florida, but cruise lines and ships are still subject to its inspection and may be detained. It had also asked all cruise ships to inform the group whether or not they will be following the CSO. Those that do not respond or will not comply with the order will be designated as 'gray' in the agency's color-coded system. CDC said this means it “cannot confirm that the cruise ship operator’s health and safety protocols align with CDC’s standards for protecting passengers, crew, port personnel and communities against the public health risks posed by COVID-19.” Despite the U.S. court ruling in Florida’s favour, ships must still report to the CDC's quarantine station individual cases of illness or death, including COVID-like illness, and all ships remain subject to inspection to prevent the spread of COVID-19 or other transmissible diseases.
