Charges for Gratuities on Royal Caribbean Going Up—as the Company Reports Huge Profits

Royal Caribbean has quietly raised its automatic gratuity charges, effective 11NOV, reports Frommers.

Passengers in most staterooms will see their daily service charge increase to USD $18, with suite guests paying USD $20.50. This marks a significant 50% increase since 2015, when it stood at USD $12.

The adjustment, while not an industry standard, may set a precedent for competitors. Carnival Cruise Line and others maintain lower rates, but this could change. Some cruise companies, like Virgin Voyages and Regent Seven Seas Cruises, embed gratuities in their fares. The move has sparked customer backlash, with questions about fair wages given Royal Caribbean's record profits, exceeding USD $1 billion in the third quarter of 2023.
