China Stops Issuing Visitor Visas in Japan, Korea in Retaliation for COVID Restrictions

As it has promised, China has begun retaliating against countries that reimposed COVID testing on arrivals from that country. The newly-reinstated restrictions by many countries, including Canada, followed that country’s reopening to travel and dropping its strict zero-COVID policy that has seen spikes in outbreaks. Countries say they are worried about new variants and Chinese reporting standards.

Reuters reports that on Tuesday, 10JAN, China stopped issuing short-term visas in South Korea and Japan. In a statement, the Chinese embassy in South Korea said it would resume when Korea’s "discriminatory entry restrictions" were lifted.

Despite re-opening, China itself continues to require testing for all arrivals to China.
