China’s C919 Takes Maiden Commercial Flight - and First Bite From Boeing

On 28MAY, the first Chinese-made passenger jet took to the skies on its inaugural commercial flight, reports the Wall Street Journal.

China’s C919, which competes directly with Boeing and Airbus, transported passengers from Shanghai to Beijing after a 16-year development that was plagued by delays. The flight marks a milestone in Chinese aspirations for aeronautical self-sufficiency amid growing trade tensions with the U.S.

The C919 was built by state-backed Comac and the first flight was operated by national carrier China Eastern. The new jet has a maximum range of 3,500 miles (5,632 km) and can seat up to 192 passengers.
