Climate Challenge Ties Ocean And River Cruising Closer Together

The owners and managers of 365 European vessels, representing 90% of the market, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to reduce emissions, reports Seatrade Cruise News.

Key challenges include sustainable marine fuel, port infrastructure, new technologies, and a regulatory environment fostering investment. The focus of cooperation between the ocean and river cruise operators includes data sharing, research and development, and environmental initiatives.

Common challenges faced by both sectors include the lack of shore power at ports and regulatory restrictions on fuel choices. Rivers could serve as a testing ground for new technologies. The EU Green Deal provides a shared framework for European ocean and river cruise operators.
