Hundreds of flights have been cancelled at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport and ground transportation has been brought to a standstill due to Storm Poly, the strongest summer storm on record to slam the Netherlands, reports IamExpat.
The Dutch Weather Institute issued a highest-risk “code red” warning for the country’s northern regions - which includes AMS - on 05JUL, with wind speeds reaching 100 to 120 km/h. Highways in the area were closed, while public transportation and train services were also halted.
A spokesperson for Schiphol Airport reported that over 700 flights have already been cancelled and imposed severe restrictions on flights scheduled between 09:00 and 15:00 05JUL. Flight cancellations are expected to rise throughout the day.
