According to CBS News, an Australian court has ruled that Carnival was negligent during a COVID-19 outbreak onboard their Ruby Princess ship in MAR 2020.
The class-action lawsuit accused the cruise line of failing to take adequate measures to protect passengers from the virus. More than 2,650 passengers were onboard the ship, and about 900 COVID-19 cases and 28 deaths were linked to the cruise.
The lead plaintiff, Susan Karpik, sought over 360,000 Australian dollars (CAD $314, 484.62) for psychological distress related to her husband's illness. While Karpik was awarded a partial amount for medical expenses, other passengers' claims are pending, potentially resulting in further compensation.
The cruise industry has faced scrutiny for its handling of the pandemic, with ongoing investigations and efforts to enhance safety protocols.
