Cross-Border Travel Not Impacted by a U.S. Government Shutdown As it is An Essential Service

A U.S. government shutdown wouldn't affect cross-border travel between the U.S. and Canada since customs is deemed essential, reports The Standard.

However, 75% of Homeland Security employees, including U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents, would work without pay. This could impact staffing at ports of entry. While a shutdown was prevented with a temporary funding bill on 30SEP, political upheaval might impede future resolutions. Despite these concerns, border officials expect no major disruptions, based on past experiences.
