Cruise ships taking long layups during the pandemic are a major cause for the biofouling affecting some vessels, Biosecurity New Zealand told Seatrade Cruise News. Biofoul is the accumulation of microorganisms, plants, algae, or even small animals on a ship’s hull. Other contributing factors include inexperienced personnel and the lack of availability of qualified divers to clean hulls.
According to the agency, eight cruise ships have failed to meet New Zealand’s biofoul compliance rules so far in 2023. Five of them were subjected to restricted itineraries allowing them to visit approved ports but not “sensitive areas” while the other three were allowed to complete their proposed itineraries.
