Cruise Ships Restart in Venice, Bring Environmental Protests

The MSC Orchestra set sail in Venice, the first in 18 months since the start of the pandemic, despite a protest from anti-cruise ship advocates. The anti-cruise ship movement opposes cruise ships sailing through Venice, citing environmental and safety concerns. Italian Premier Mario Draghi pledged to have cruise ships out of the city, but that goal is likely not to happen before 2022. Hundreds of Venetians crowded beside the canal to protest at the ships departure, citing a series of past decrees to limit ships they say were never enforced. Still, the Italian government is saying there is no simple solution so far, and even alternative cruise routes will not be available until 2022.
