According to a Reuters report in Skift, “tourism officials in Cuba have to fight the perception that a visit isn't worth the hassle because of ongoing blackouts and shortages.”
While acknowledging that many visitors “rave” about their Cuba travel experiences, the report says that a deep economic crisis is badly affecting its all-important tourism sector, with recovery lagging far behind other countries, it says.
It provides a comparison with next-door Dominican Republic as an example. “Cuba in 2022 received 1.6 million visitors, just 38% of the 4.3 million who traveled to the island in 2019, prior to the pandemic. Neighboring Dominican Republic, meanwhile, saw 7.2 million visitors in 2022, up 11.1% over 2019.”
