Does Venice Hold the Key to Saving Cities from Mass Tourism?

Following Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s move to ban cruise ships from Venice’s lagoon, city dwellers around the world can take a look at what life can be like without the burden of mass tourism. The cruise ship ban in Venice may be just the start of further tourism regulations and the reinvention of the tourism industry. In Italy, tourism accounts for 6% of GDP, and Venice accounts for millions of tourists per year pre-pandemic, but complaints from locals bring up issues such as damaged infrastructure, overcrowding and a rising sea level. Bloomberg states that policies and regulations that limit tourism as a way of combating negative environmental impacts shouldn’t be seen as targeting tourists, but rather a necessary investment to keep peace between locals, tourists, and the environment.
