Europe's Strikes Could Lead to Summer Travel Chaos and Impact Bookings

Strikes in Europe in 2023 have caused a huge increase in flight cancellations and delays, and if labour action continues through the summer the travel picture is likely to be extremely chaotic, according to Reuters. 33,300 flights were cancelled over Easter (05-11APR) alone. The most delays were in France and the U.K. CDG alone says it lost 470,000 passengers between JAN and MAR due to strikes. Germany, Spain and Italy are also seeing strikes affecting travel.

According to reports, strikes are likely to continue if new agreements with unions are not reached, and in France the government is not backing down on its reforms, meaning that the disruptions are likely to last into the summer - high travel season.

In addition to affecting air, transportation and activities in Europe, the strikes could push ticket prices up as airlines are required to compensate passengers for flight disruptions, and all of these factors combined may have an impact on bookings, the report says
