Flights in Germany 13JUL Halted by Climate Activists; Some Even Glued to Runways

Climate activists staged blockades at airports in Hamburg and Düsseldorf 13JUL, causing significant disruptions to flights, reports DW.

The protestors cut through fences at both airports, and some individuals even glued themselves to the runways. Their aim was to draw attention to growing air traffic which adds to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and climate change. The activists criticized Germany’s Transport Ministry for lacking a concrete plan to reduce emissions.

In Hamburg, 46 flights were delayed, cancelled or diverted, while Düsseldorf airport experienced delays due to “unauthorized access.” According to the police, the activists will face charges.
