France on Heightened Alert After Paris Attack Leaves One Tourist Dead

In a knife and hammer attack near the Eiffel Tower, one person was killed and two others injured in central Paris, reports CNN.

The assailant, a French citizen with a history of violence and psychiatric disorders, was arrested by French police. The victims included a German tourist and a British national.

The suspect, who had previously been sentenced to prison, claimed he attacked in response to Muslim deaths in Afghanistan and Palestine.

French President Macron labelled it a terror attack, initiating an investigation by the anti-terrorism prosecutor's office. Prime Minister Borne convened a cabinet meeting to assess national security while condolences poured in from global leaders.
