Germany and Austria Strengthen Rail Links as EU Clamps Down on Short Haul Flights

Business Travel News reports that Germany and Austria have announced stronger rail links, with Deutsche Bahn (DB) and Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) launching more cross-border services.

Both companies expect a 40% increase in passengers this year compared to five years ago as rail travel between the countries grows, especially as the EU clamps down on short haul flights to reduce carbon emissions.

Starting in DEC, there will be Nightjet connections from Berlin and Vienna to Paris and Brussels, with plans to double the number of Nightjet passengers by 2030. New ÖBB Nightjet trains capable of travelling at 230 km/h will also be introduced on the Hamburg-Vienna and Hamburg-Innsbruck routes. Additionally, new ICE 4 and Railjet trains will connect various cities.
