Hawaii Governor Suggests Charging ‘Climate Impact Fee’ To Visitors To Prevent Future Disasters

Hawaii Governor Josh Green has suggested implementing a 'climate impact fee' for tourists to prevent future disasters caused by climate change, reports Forbes.

In a press conference, Green discussed plans to possibly allow locals displaced by recent historic fires and tourists to stay in the same hotels on Maui. He emphasized the need to address climate change and its impact on increasing the severity of disasters.

The proposed fee, previously campaigned for by Green, could generate an estimated USD $500-$600 million per year - some of which could be used for preventative measures such as hiring more firefighters and improving equipment.
