Hawaii's famous Haiku Stairs, which are sometimes called the Stairway to Heaven, are likely to be removed in 2022 following a Honolulu City Council meeting to discuss ongoing issues with the popular site. The stairs were originally built by the US Navy in the 1940s, and are 3,922 steps in total through a 2,800 foot mountain trail in Kaneohe, Oahu. The stairs reach their apex in the clouds near the peak of the mountain and are considered to be the best view in Hawaii. In 1987, the stairs were made permanently off-limits to visitors, but this did not stop hikers, thrill seekers, online influencers, and other tourists from sneaking into the site. "Due to rampant illegal trespassing, Haiku Stairs is a significant liability and expense for the city, and impacts the quality of life for nearby residents," councilmember Esther Kiaʻāina told Hawaii News Now. On 08SEP, the Honolulu City Council voted unanimously in favor of removing the staircase for good. "The city has already spent nearly $1 million in taxpayer dollars to remodel the stairs and hundreds of thousands of dollars in security costs," council member Brandon Elefante told Hawaii News Now. The measure was sent to Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi, who is expected to approve the removal within 60 days.
