On 09JUL, U.S. President Joe Biden issued an executive order that included a call to make the travel industry more consumer friendly, noting that consumers often may pay too much for services in the wake of industry consolidation. Biden suggested a few changes for the airline industry, such as refunds of checked bag fees for lost luggage to more generalized directions to “ensure competition in air transportation.” The 09JUL executive order asked for the Department of Transportation to work on making flight information more comprehensive and to include “new or lesser-known airlines,” as well as demanding a report of airlines failing to provide timely refunds during the pandemic, and asked for refunds paid for ancillary services like WiFi access or lost checked bags. The order also indicates that the airline industry is too concentrated. Since 2001, there have been at least eight major mergers and acquisitions in the U.S. airline industry, reducing the choice for customers to have for flying. As a result of the order, shopping for cheaper airfare may become easier if all recommendations are implemented.
