Martinique Returns to Lockdown, Asks Tourists to Leave

The French government is tightening COVID-19 restrictions in Martinique and Guadeloupe as the rising infection rates are overwhelming hospitals. On 10AUG, Maritinique went into a three-week lockdown and advised tourists to leave the island. Its beaches and nonessential shops have closed. According to the Associated Press, anyone remaining in Martinique will be prohibited from traveling more than a half mile from home. In Martinique, less than 20 per cent of the population has been vaccinated and the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has been climbing. In Guadeloupe, less than 40 per cent of the local population has been fully vaccinated, and the island has reported nearly 9,000 cases in the last month.
