Monterey, CA Tells Cruise Lines to Push Off

The city of Monterey in California will end passenger landing services for incoming cruise ships following a 3-2 vote at city council. As reported by Travel Weekly, the city, which saw 7 to 12 visits per year pre-pandemic, has no actual power to ban ships from docking. Cruise ships will still be allowed to drop anchor in the bay and take guests to the shore via tender, but cruise lines will have to hire staff at the port to process passengers at the city's public dock.

City officials say they hope the decision will lead cruise lines to stop calling at Monterey Bay, which is home to one of the largest marine sanctuaries in the U.S. According to one city official, the goal is avoiding accidental discharge from ships into the Bay.
