According to a United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) report, international tourism could ultimately lose more than USD $4 trillion in global GDP for 2020 and 2021. The same report also said that international tourism and it’s reliant sectors lost an estimated USD $2.4 trillion in 2020 due to direct and indirect impacts of a steep drop in international tourist arrivals. It mentions that a similar loss may occur this year, and that the recovery of the tourism sector will depend on the uptake of global COVID-19 vaccination rates. "The world needs a global vaccination effort that will protect workers, mitigate adverse social effects and make strategic decisions regarding tourism," UNCTAD Acting Secretary-General Isabelle Durant said.
