MSC Looks to Build First Oceangoing Hydrogen-Powered Cruise Ship

MSC Cruises is looking to build the first oceangoing hydrogen-powered cruise ship in partnership with Fincantieri and Snam. The three companies will begin studying the development of this technology over the next year, and may then enter a future binding agreement between all three parties. Green hydrogen technology is able to generate electrical power through a fuel cell, emitting only water vapor and heat, meaning that a cruise ship powered by this method will have drastically lower carbon emissions. Pierfrancesco Vago, executive chairman of the Cruise Division of MSC Group said: “As a company that has long made environmental sustainability its focus, we want to put ourselves at the forefront of the energy revolution for our sector and hydrogen can greatly contribute to this.”
