Nearly one million snowbirds are hoping to travel to the U.S. this winter after the pandemic cancelled their 2021 plans. “Most of them are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and they want to check out their properties in Florida and Arizona,” said Evan Rachkovsky with the Canadian Snowbirds Association. “We are anticipating up to 90 per cent of snowbirds with properties in the U.S. will go south this year." Around 70 per cent of snowbirds drive to their properties, so the still-closed land border has added stress to winter plans. Another factor for snowbirds to consider is a vaccination requirement for entry, especially whether or not mixed vaccines are allowed. Snowbirds must also consider travel health insurance, which is particularly important during the pandemic. Some insurance plans have different COVID-19 coverage policies, and the Canadian Snowbird Association advises snowbirds to only take a policy that provides at least $1m in COVID-19 related coverages.
