Local lawmakers in NYC are pushing for a bill that would mandate cruise ships to connect to the city's energy grid rather than using fossil fuels while docked, reports AMNY.
Currently, critics say these ships emit carbon equivalent to 34,000 tractor-trailers daily. The bill, Intro 1050, would compel cruise lines to use "shore power" while docked.
Despite the availability of shore power, many cruise ships in NYC do not utilize it. Shore power, also known as "cold ironing," refers to providing electrical power to a ship at berth while its main and auxiliary engines are turned off. Instead of relying on their onboard diesel generators, vessels connect to the local electrical grid of the port. This connection reduces the need for ships to burn fuel to generate power while docked, subsequently decreasing emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases in port areas. Using shore power enhances air quality, reduces noise pollution, and can significantly save ships energy costs in the long run.
