On Cruise Ships, Omicron Puts Safety Protocols to the Test

With the rise of the Omicron variant, many cruise lines are adjusting their masking, testing and vaccine protocols, while criticism is mounting over the lack of transparency in reporting positive cases to passengers and crew members. A crew member on the Norwegian Breakaway, which recently had a breakout of 17 positive cases in New Orleans, said he first heard about the outbreak from a friend and fellow employee. Before the large spike in cases worldwide, cruise operations were reported to be largely successful, with most cruise companies mandating full vaccination, along with health and safety protocols onboard.
