One-Third of Cruise Ships Failed NZ Biosecurity Rules

Nearly a third of all cruise ships attempting to enter New Zealand this cruise season have failed the country’s strict biosecurity rules, said the manager of environmental health for Biosecurity New Zealand.

As reported by local NZ media, 11 vessels of the 35 ships attempting to enter the country had compliance issues, eight were subject to restricted itineraries and permitted only to visit approved ports, one cleaned the hull before arrival and two were directed to leave NZ waters and return once they had clean hulls. The agency highlighted that the rules are in place to prevent the arrival of “marine pests” which travel on the underwater surfaces of international vessels.
