Dubbed “Operation Elf,” volunteer pilots are loading up planes with gifts and dropping them off throughout Fraser Canyon, which was hit hard by catastrophic flooding earlier this year. According to one pilot, their efforts have flown close to 400,000 lbs of goods to the Siska, Nicomen, Nooaitch and Lytton First Nations, which are among those that remain virtually cut off from the rest of the province. In the last week, volunteers have also set up makeshift shopping centres in community halls where people can come and pick out gifts to give family and friends. “It brought the spirit back of Christmas to these communities which have been hit really hard. For us, it puts a smile on our face,” said one volunteer pilot.
