Canada significantly lags behind other countries in its airport screening practices, according to an op/ed in the Globe and Mail.
The article, written by Duncan Dee, former chief operating officer at Air Canada, follows the announcement that Ottawa is launching a new Verified Traveller program at select airports across Canada — years after a federal review of the transportation system recommended such a program.
The author notes that the Minister of Transport had to overcome nearly a decade of significant bureaucratic resistance to abandoning the air traveller screening model Canada has clung to since 9/11. The program that the new Canadian model is based on is already available at every commercial American airport.
As Open Jaw reported, the Verified Traveller program will be introduced at six Canadian airports beginning 21JUN. As part of the program, eligible travellers will be able to keep laptops, large electronics and compliant liquids and gels in their carry-on, as well as keep their shoes, belt and light jacket on while going through security.
