Opinion: Rich WestJet Deal Only Way to Retain Pilots in Canada

WestJet pilots deserved every penny they bargained for, says an op/ed in the Calgary Herald. 

As Open Jaw reported, in MAY, WestJet pilots secured a 24 per cent pay raise over four years, totaling around $400 million in extra compensation. 

While some criticize the pilots’ complaints due the fact that on average, a mid-career WestJet pilot will earn several times that of most Canadians, the author, a management consultant and freelance writer, said this deal will be good for the country in the long run. The deal is about paying pilots what the market — which has changed dramatically post-pandemic — will bear so they don’t leave for even higher salaries south of the border.
