Pandemic Tourism Boost to Less-Crowded Locations Is Slowing Down

Rural and outdoor destinations, which saw a boost in tourism in the pandemic, are now seeing slower growth rates compared to big cities as Americans return to travelling internationally.

As reported by Skift, travellers ditched densely populated cities for rural and outdoor destinations during the pandemic, and smaller destinations saw “massive jumps” from their pre-pandemic tourism levels. Now, 2022 gains for these destinations aren’t as strong as they were in 2021. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, big global cities are now “back and growing in popularity“ after a rough 2021 and 2020.

However, smaller destinations are seeking to encourage road trip travel as air travel costs rise.
