Pilots are raising concerns over an aviation industry proposal to reduce the number of pilots required on the flight deck, reports CTV News.
Plane makers Airbus and Dassault Aviation submitted a proposal to the European Union requesting some aircraft to be crewed by just one pilot for part of the flight. At a recent conference in Montreal, representatives from three of the largest pilot unions criticized the proposal, warning it could prioritize airline profits over passenger safety.
An example given was a flight YUL-CDG. Under the proposed changes, two pilots would be required in the cockpit for the first and last 45 minutes of the trip, but they could take turns resting during the rest of the flight, rather than requiring two pilots on the flight deck throughout the trip, with a third resting.
